Labor Market Deregulation and Deaths of Despair

Using OECD employment protection indicators and WHO mortality data for 26 advanced economies (1998–2019), I show that major employment-protection deregulation reforms are followed by a significant rise in drug-related and suicide mortality within five years, with no corresponding rise in alcohol-related mortality — effects moderated by health-system effectiveness, income support, and poverty.

With Marwil J. Dávila-Fernández. Introduces substance abuse into the Goodwin growth-cycle model as an endogenous channel linking income distribution to aggregate productivity, and shows the system bifurcates into persistent, bounded fluctuations above a critical threshold.
